Islamabad (Balochistan News) – The Federal Constitutional Court has issued an important verdict regarding the tribal system and verification of identity documents, stating that tribal chiefs are not authorized to verify identity cards and domiciles.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Amir Farooq issued a 12-page judgment, stating that identity cards and domiciles can only be issued by authorized government officials in accordance with the law.
The court ruled that no tribal chief can be granted authority to verify documents beyond the law, adding that the tribal system was abolished in 1976 and has no legal status.
The judgment further stated that regional customs cannot be given legal recognition through judicial orders, and only a person who is directly affected is eligible to approach the court.
Petitioner Ghulam Ali had argued that he is the chief of the Khuroti tribe and that verification of documents for members of his tribe becomes difficult; however, the court declared his appeal inadmissible.
